Spirit...

Our families really shaped our beliefs and values. Our parents taught us that honesty and acceptance are the keys to being happy with who you are. They taught us to work hard, learn as much as you can, and pursue your passions. Looking back, we realize that our families we’re happy because we had traditions, we had fun things we did together that made us feel like a team, and even when we went through tough times we always knew we could count on our families to love and support each other. So values like Honesty, Optimism, Loving Kindness, Acceptance, Encouragement, and even "Finding The Funny In Things" are really core to who we are. It’s why we click together.

Here’s a little about our spirituality from each of us...

DAVE: I consider myself a deeply spiritual person. I was raised Catholic and I went to Catholic grade school, high school and college. At my college, a Jesuit university, I befriended several priests, one of whom, Father Wren, also taught Zen Buddhism. Father Wren didn’t see the core truths of these different religions as being incompatible and neither did I. Studying Buddhism through a Christian viewpoint (and vice versa) really broadened my horizons spiritually and played a big part in my moving to Japan for four years where I taught English to children and adults. In Japan, my spirituality continued to grow and be tested. I came to believe that most religions have elements of truth, which should be respected, but also that one religion does not have a monopoly on truth over another religion. And that is how I plan to raise my child — with respect for all religions and the profound connection it brings with a discerning eye for the truth. As far as my day to day spiritual practice goes, I believe in prayer, meditation and reading. When it comes to action, I follow my heart and ask for God’s guidance.

MEG: I was raised in the Episcopal Church and feel a real connection to my family’s home chapel in Rhode Island. However, my spirituality also includes study and practice of Buddhism and Zen meditation. I discovered these spiritual practices while studying eastern art in college, as well as through reading, meditative retreat, and travels to Japan, Thailand, and China. David and I share this spiritual interest and often meditate and pray together. I would like to have our child baptized and we would support them on their own spiritual journey by teaching them about the different beliefs that enrich peoples’ lives around the world.
